President's Message

August 1, 2016

Dear CCA Families,

Opportunities. Isn't that what every one of us wants for our children?

Here at Canyon Crest Academy every child has an opportunity. Whether it is an opportunity to be an athlete, actor, singer, dancer, musician, photographer, cinematographer, researcher or humanities scholar, your child has the opportunity to explore and shine in any of these areas. No matter your child's skill or interest, the Canyon Crest Academy Foundation is committed to helping your child -- our students -- explore these opportunities.

Of course, without the generous donations from our parents to the CCA Foundation, our children would not have these tremendous opportunities. Because of you, our Foundation is able to provide our students with financial support to achieve these great accomplishments in academics, the arts, and athletics.

CCA's 2016 - 2017 budget is not unlike those of the past few years. Our school continues to face ongoing challenges of a significant gap between public funds available and funds needed to keep our programs and school at the very top. Therefore, we turn to you, returning or new CCA parents, to help us bridge that gap - with donations to the CCA Foundation to meet our Academics, Athletics, and Envision Arts program needs.

WHY DO WE NEED DONATIONS FOR A PUBLIC SCHOOL?  The answer is very simple and yet also very complex.  Although the SDUHSD receives money from the state, the amount is insufficient to pay for the exemplary classroom instruction and special programs that our community expects at CCA.  The complexity of school funding in California results in our district having the lowest per-pupil high school district funding in San Diego County and one of the lowest in the state.

The gap between funding and CCA’s need grows every year and donations fill the gap.  Your generous, tax-deductible donations bridge the funding chasm and enrich the experience of every student, every day.

About 84% of district spending funds the important work of our teachers and staff, leaving just $1,310 per student for books, supplies and other expenses.  Your donations contribute another $434 per student to the budget, which is about 24% of non-teacher/staff spending at the school!

So, your donations are critical to ensure that our school continues to offer exceptional enrichment opportunities that are the hallmark of CCA.  This year, our goal is to raise $1,250,000 with 100% participation, and we can’t do it without your support.  Your donations are the reason these programs exist!

During the past year, donations to the CCA Foundation have provided:

-The College and Career Center and its staff

-Extended tutoring hours with certificated teachers Monday through Thursday until 5:30 p

-After-school enrichment classes, such as the ever-popular Surf Board Shaping

-New state-of-the-art microscopes for science classrooms

-Replacement Dell computers as needed across campus and Chromebooks for history classrooms

-Bike racks

-Orchestra Shell and Marquee for the Proscenium Theater

-Thermo-Fisher Scientific equipment for QUEST

As your student has progressed through high school, funding from the CCA Foundation has impacted the educational experience every day.  From the first day of school, with the state-of-the-art technology, science and language labs, and arts instruction found in your student’s classrooms; to the last day of school, when students receive a diploma provided by the CCA Foundation, generous parent donations contribute to an enriched and rewarding high school experience.  With this in mind, we ask you now to please make a donation to the CCAF so we can continue serving the needs of our students.  More than ever, we need your ‘A Dollar a Day for CCA’ donation of $180 to our general fund for basic academic needs this year.

Donors who bring their Raven’sFund contribution to Readiness Days or Back-to-School Night will receive an appreciation gift at our donation table.  We ask you to consider starting with a $180 donation to our Raven’s Fund, and then adding to designated categories based upon the experiences your students select during their Fall and Spring Terms

So, I ask for your donation NOW as we begin the school year so we can ensure that all our programs are funded throughout the year. Without your contributions these programs would not exist! It is easy to donate directly to your child's specific interest or to our general Raven's Fund. There are many ways to give including monthly installments, credit card, or check. Just visit our online donations page or pay by check or credit card through our Foundation office.

Won't you help us continue to give these opportunities to all our children?

Sincerely,

Carolyn Cohen

Canyon Crest Foundation Board President
